Getting Started – Broadcast

The ‘Getting Started’ project was funded by the Employable Communities Fund and introduced a group of adults to the technical and artistic elements of filmmaking. They worked together to plan, write, coordinate and star in this film which includes a TV show based at Toxteth TV studio. The film was screened at NOVAS.

In Focus

As part of the In Focus film and broadcast project, Toxteth TV are working with a group of carers, training them in digital technology, film and broadcast. For part of their film entitled ‘Lion Taming’, which highlights the difficulties experienced by carers, the group visited the House of Commons to question the ‘All Party Parliamentary Group for Carers’ and interview its Chair, Dr Hywel Francis MP.

‘In Focus’ has been supported by the Government’s new Transformation Fund for informal adult learning.

My Voice, My City

Toxteth TV are working on the ‘My Voice. My City’ project with young people from Liverpool 8 at risk. Supported by the Home Office Community Fund this project works with young people training them in writing and film making, encouraging them to use film as a medium for expression.

The young people have completed a screenplay and are in the process of rehearsing and increasing their technical film making knowledge ahead of filming.

Northern Advantage

On Friday 3rd April Toxteth TV in association with Onteca hosted The Northern Advantage breakfast ‘Pitching Tips’ workshop. This was attended by a variety of freelance media practitioners. The session was led by TV producer John Forrest and Radio Producer Janet Graves.

This workshop was part of a series of ‘free to attend’ information and networking sessions intended to enhance employment potential that are being held across the region in the premises of independent media and digital companies.

The Northern Advantage is no ordinary training scheme but, underpinned with access to professional mentors, it will offer some of the best freelance media practitioners in the Northwest a collaborative and business enhanced approach to their personal development and working experience.

This activity is funded by the Skillset TV Freelance Fund and the Digital and Media Skills Programme, delivered by Northwest Vision and Media in partnership with Skillset, and supported by the North West Development Agency.

Eco friendly Toxteth TV

When designing and building Toxteth TV reducing energy bills thereby improving economic viability was a major goal. We strive to achieve environmental good practise, we have been recycling paper, cardboard and glass for the last six years in line with our Environmental Policy. We have also recycled office furniture, computers and monitors, wooden palates, building materials, in fact anything that could be recycled has been.

In the last two years we have installed two living roofs on two of the four buildings that we own and manage. The first one was installed on the Toxteth TV studio roof in April 07 and is a Green Roof. It has at least four different types of Sedums (drought resistant plants) and sits on recycled crushed brick and recycled foam. Not only does it benefit local biodiversity, it also benefits the building in that it prolongs the life of the roof by up to twenty years and provides insulation during the winter. Throughout the summer it provides an ambient temperature lessening the carbon footprint of the building. Furthermore it utilises rain water so there is far less water run off from the roof and less work for the drains to do.

We’ve installed a Brown Roof at John Archer Hall which is also a “living roof” but different to a green roof in that most of the plants and insect life are left to their own devices to colonise the roof with little input from ourselves only to add some wildflower seeds and a very small number of natural aquatic plants.

The living roof at John Archer Hall has full disabled access and will be used by other agencies such as Natural England, Mersey Forests and the North Merseyside Biodiversity Action Agency to educate and promote living roofs in the North West.

The Project received £24,942 funding from SITA Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund. SITA Trust distributes funding through the Landfill Communities Fund.Funding is available for community and environmental improvement projects within ten miles of an active SITA UK landfill site. Since 1997 the Trust has allocated over £54m to hundreds of projects across the UK.

What is Toxteth TV?
We provide a Media production resource where young people aged 14- 18 years can train alongside Professional Production Companies in a fully accessible facility in Windsor Street. The building houses a managed workspace in one half and the other is dedicated space for the provision of video production training and includes a full size and professionally equipped studio space.

Who is it for?
The training is aimed at young people who are at risk of disengagement from education and caters for school children aged 14-16 years and young people aged 16- 18. The learning is delivered through exciting hands on video projects which aim to reengage young people into learning as well as providing an introduction to the skills needed to create short video programmes.

What will they be doing?
The project offers 14 -16 year olds one day a week short courses where they will be making either a pop promo, a soap type drama or a documentary video. They will work as a team to design, plan, shoot and edit short videos using the extensive resources at Toxteth TV. The courses will last approximately 11 weeks each and any learner that completes will have a level 1 qualification validated by Liverpool Community College.

For 16-18 year olds there is a full time course that offers the same project based experience along with the opportunity to achieve a level 2 NCFE Video Production qualification. We also offer daylong tasters for both age groups.

The emphasis is on becoming involved in an enjoyable and stimulating production experience which will open up pathways and possibilities for further learning either within video production or any other area of learning offered within the city.

Mission: Toxteth TV through education, training & small business support will help foster a positive environment for the development of individuals and businesses.

What is Toxteth TV?
In association with Liverpool Community College we provide training and education for young people giving them skills that can lead to a number of progression routes both in education and potentially into employment. We also provide office space for small media companies, community organisations and SMEs, aswell as providing facilities such as TV studio, training rooms and professional film equipment for hire. Our community film and arts work is extensive working with a range of young people aged eight to eighty.

What makes it different?
Toxteth TV focuses upon increased access for under represented sections of the community, in particular those young people who have been or have felt excluded from mainstream education or have under achieved at school. In this way it will open up career paths to those who would not otherwise have access to the TV and media industries.

Where is it?
Toxteth TV Studio is one of a group of buildings along Windsor Street including the old Mission Hall and the Old Windsor School site. The Studio is located on the site of the Old Windsor Castle Pub.

A short film about Recycling

Toxteth TV teamed up with Princes SEN School and Matthew Arnold Primary School to make a film about recycling.

The children learnt about different aspects of film making before embarking upon their film on which they operated the camera, recorded the sound and carried out interviews.

The film looks at what we can recycle and why it’s so important.

This project is supported by the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund.

Toxteth TV Allotment

Toxteth TV is combining film with nature as we embark upon turning disused ground into a community allotment. From clearing the ground, to planting seeds to harvesting and eventually eating the produce. It promises to be an exciting project. We are also combing a film making aspect. children aged 10 -12 will be trained in film making whilst making a documentary about the allotment.

This project is being supported by Culture Liverpool, LCVS, the Hemby Trust, the Co-operative Community Fund and the Radio Merseyside Merseyside Charitable Trust

TTV News Toxteth TV Film Academy

The Toxteth TV Film Academy is working on a documentary looking at ‘labels’. What are labels? How are we labelled? Are they good or bad?

Currently in pre production, we plan to film in March, and screen after Easter.

The young people are trained in all aspects of filmmaking and will write, direct and produce the film themselves.

The project is supported by Liverpool Youth Service’s ‘Youth Opportunity Fund’.
