The launch of the Toxteth TV’s Commuinity Reporters Project and handing over of the Social Licence from Peoples Voice Media was a fantastic day for everyone at Toxteth TV.

The Community Reporters Project symbolises what is really important to Toxteth TV: providing local people with the skills and means to share their stories and a platform to do so. And with a partner like Peoples Voice Media we knew it was going to be pretty special!

We were honoured to have Gary Copitch, the Director of Peoples Voice Media and Martha Lane Fox, the UK Digital Champion (pic above) attending and speaking at the event and a big thanks to everyone who came down to find out more about our plans.

From January 2012 we will be training our trainers to deliver Community Reporter courses. Local people can get involved, learn new skills and share the news and stories that really matter to them with the support of our trainers whilst gaining accreditation though Peoples Voice Media.

Splendid Things presents Toxteth TV’s first ever 3D film!

Filmmaker Nikki Rose has been working with young people from The Greenhouse Project to make a film that will be screened in 3D, thanks to the experience of 3D expert Rob Black.

The young people, aged 7 – 14 have been involved in all stages of the production from the inital idea to storyboarding, filming, directing, starring in and editing the final film.

It will screened at FACT in January 2012 and will also be available to view here…

Partnering with Turn It Around CIC and Liverpool Youth Service the project aims to engage hard to reach young women through ‘on the streets’ outreach, work with them to confront issues associated with gang culture and make a film that reflects their experiences opinions and knowledge.

The film will be screened at FACT in January 2012 and then the group of filmmakers will tour it, alongside an issue based workshop they will create and deliver, around local schools.

Turn It Around staff and mentors will be on hand to support all the young women involved in the project through any issues that arise and will be able to offer ongoing inclusion activities.

Toxteth TV hosted an exhibition of art work by American artist Eric Humphries in the studio

The exhibit is an artistic interpretation of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot and consists of specially printed copies sent by the artist from America of eight canvases depicting the terror and atrocities of the riots in a flat, comic strip style. This year is the 90^th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Riots, arguably the most horrific event in the United State’s history. During 16 hours of fighting over 800 people were injured, 300 were killed and 10,000 were left homeless. More than 1,000 homes were destroyed by fire and millions of pounds of damage occurred, Greenwood, the black side of Tulsa was completely and utterly destroyed. The exhibit is entitled “Is the World on Fire?”

Joe Farrag, community development worker for SHAP has brought the exhibition to the area. After being made an honorary citizen of New Orleans in 1993 he has felt an affinity with the United States and first heard of the events around the riots at a book reading in Louisiana.

At a time when people are remembering the 30^th anniversary of the Toxteth riots, this exhibition, at Toxteth TV (37-45 Windsor Street) allowed people to relate to and learn from these events which are little spoken about.

The project has been teaching the fundamentals of film making, from basic camera work and editing, to lighting workshops and project development.

With five weeks remaining, the weekly, 4-hour academy now has its sights set on producing a short film for submission to a local festival – the first big step in any new filmmakers’ career.

The academy makes full use of the facilities at Toxteth TV, offering the students a wide range of technical equipment and physical space in which to find their creativity, act on their ideas, and have a lot of fun at the same time.
