Toxteth TV hosted an evening of discussion and debate, live in its studios last month, inviting members of the local community and organisations to put the spotlight on the Big Society in a community Question Time event.

What is the ‘big society’, and how does Toxteth and other local communities fit into the concept? How will public sector cuts affect the area, and what do these cuts mean for the future of existing community projects?

These are just a couple of questions that members of the local community put to Louise Ellman MP, Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of the PCT Board, Claire Dove, CEO Blackburn House and more, in an evening that ranged from light discussion over refreshments, to ardent debate in front of our lights and cameras in the studio.

The Spotlight on the Big Society event was well attended by a diverse array of people from the community, with something to say about the changes that will be occurring in their area.

Our panel gets a grilling from our community audience

Toxteth TV proved itself to be the ideal hub for this cohesive community event that aimed to facilitate discussion on issues that matter, and present them in a clear, coherent and professional media environment.

The LCVS CitySafe funded event was successful in bringing together a variety of community leaders, local politicians, health care professionals and community members, to put into words the concerns that many residents and organisations feel about the near future, and what part they will play in a ‘big society’ that has, for many years now, been alive and kicking in Toxteth.
